  3. First of all I want to say great blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your mind before writing. I have had trouble clearing my mind in getting my ideas out there. I truly do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Cheers!

    • Hi. Thanks for visiting and the nice words.

Every song is different. Sometimes you sit down to write and nothing comes out. Sometimes I have an idea for a song that is so exciting that by the time I get a guitar in my hand or get to my computer I have a verse and chorus written in my head. Sometimes it’s just a lyric or chord progression that inspires me. Like I said, different every time.

The one thing that remains throughout all of that is the diligence in just sitting down and doing the work. Even when you aren’t inspired. Even when it’s tough and you’re grumpy or tired. I’m of the opinion that writing is just as valid and potentially mundane as any other job and the only way to get better at it is to do the work.

Hope that’s helpful. Oh and also – listening to Paul Simon or Randy Newman is always helpful for inspiration. Take care!
